Back to Routine: How to Restart Training After the Summer
Holidays and busy summers knock most routines off course. Here is how to restart without overdoing it, and rebuild a habit that lasts into the new season.
September often feels like a fresh start. Children go back to school, work picks up and many people decide it is time to get back into training. The risk is trying to make up for the whole summer in the first week.
Start below where you finished
If you have had a few weeks off, begin at roughly two thirds of the weights and volume you were using before. You will be back to your previous level faster than you expect, without the soreness that makes people quit in week two.
Choose a realistic weekly target
Two or three sessions a week is plenty to rebuild momentum. Decide the days now and put them in your calendar alongside the school run and work commitments.
Rebuild the basics first
Spend the first few weeks on simple, effective movements: squats, hinges, presses, rows and carries. Focus on good technique. This rebuilds strength and confidence at the same time.
Bring food back into a rhythm
Summer usually means more meals out and less routine. Rather than a strict diet, aim for regular meals built around protein, vegetables and enough water. Consistency matters far more than perfection.
Set a goal for the next twelve weeks
Twelve weeks takes you to Christmas. Pick one clear target, such as training twice a week every week or improving a specific lift, and measure it. A defined finish line keeps you focused.
Get support early
The first month back is where most people need the most help. A coach can give you a structured plan and remove the guesswork, so getting started feels simple.
